I’m 40, a Mom of Four, and My Skin Has Changed — Here’s What I Wish I’d Added Sooner

Somewhere around 40, after four kids, my skin started asking for different things than it did in my 30s. Not worse things. Just different. Drier in places it never used to be. Slower to bounce back. The same products I’d trusted for years just weren’t doing what they used to do.

Nobody really warns you about that part. Everyone talks about the pregnancy skin and the postpartum skin, and then it just… goes quiet. So I figured it out slowly, one product at a time, and today I’m sharing what actually earned a spot on my shelf.

This is a simple skincare routine for women in their 40s — not a ten-step thing, because I don’t have ten steps in me. Five minutes, most nights. That’s what’s realistic in this season, and it’s enough.

What changed for me at 40

Dark spots I’d never seen before. Dullness. Texture, and fine lines that weren’t there a few years ago. And the products I’d relied on for years suddenly weren’t doing the trick.

What finally shifted things wasn’t one miracle product — it was getting more intentional. I started microdermabrasion, and once I did, the products I was already using started working on a whole different level. Turns out my skin didn’t need more stuff. It needed a better foundation to work with.

The one I wish I’d added sooner

I’ve been consistent with sunscreen for as long as I can remember — that part I got right early. But red light is the thing I’d go back and start sooner if I could. One note on which one to buy: I have an older version of this mask, and it works — but it’s heavier and more rigid. The newer one is lighter and actually molds to your face, which sounds like a small thing until you’re trying to wear it for ten minutes while making lunches. That’s the one I’d buy today, and it’s the one I’ve linked.

The catch is that it only works if you actually do it. Not once a week when you remember. Consistently. It’s not a product you buy and forget about — it’s a habit, and that’s exactly why most people don’t see results from it. But if you take it seriously, it’s a game changer.

What I use in the morning

I start by washing my face with this face cleanser, I rotate between a vitamin C, and a peptide serum depending on the day — some mornings my skin wants the brightening, some mornings it wants the support. On the days I use the peptide, I’ll layer a NAD serum over it.

From there it’s eye cream, moisturizer, then SPF. The sunscreen is the one step I never skip, no matter how rushed the morning is.

If I know I’m going to be out on the field with the kids all afternoon, I swap in a tinted SPF instead. It gives me a little coverage, protects my skin, and means I can skip makeup entirely — which, on a game day, is exactly what I want.

Five products. Two of them rotate. That’s the whole routine.

What I use at night

At night I start with this face cleanser to get the day off my face.

Then comes my active, and this is the part I’ve gotten more intentional about. I rotate between a retinol and a prescription tretinoin depending on the season. In the winter my skin can handle more, so I lean into the stronger option. In the summer, when I’m outside constantly with the kids, I dial it back to the gentler one. (Tretinoin is prescribed by my dermatologist — please talk to yours before starting anything like it.)

After that, I layera peptide serum on top, follow it with a rich night cream to seal everything.

Written out it looks like a lot. In practice it’s about five minutes, and most nights it’s the only five minutes of the day that belong entirely to me.

The five-minute version

Here’s the honest truth: some nights I do all of it. Some nights I wash my face and put on retinol and moisturizer and call it a win.

Both count. Taking care of yourself looks different at different stages of motherhood — and doing the short version is still doing it.
